What Do We Do?
We are different from a conventional gym.
You might be thinking, what exactly do we do?
This is one of the most asked questions that we get!
We fall under the banner of a ‘movement gym’ but what does that mean?
It means we favor quality over quantity.
It means we play the long game, afterall, we only have one body to live in, and we want to feel strong and capable whatever our age.
It means we have a focus on injury prevention and can cater for rehab too. Something that every body can benefit from.
It means we create real, usable strength and mobility. We look strong and we ARE strong.
It means we can improve your quality of life through better movement.
It means we attract a humble, supportive and like-minded community from all walks of life.
It means we help you achieve bad-ass skills to empower and excite you.
It means our classes are fun and educational.
It means we train our minds, not just our bodies.
It means we use a combination of bodyweight, calisthenics, gymnastic strength, stretch-based therapy and other disciplines that nourish the body.
It means we create strong, mobile and skillful bodies – which will give you the freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want, in a body that works for you, not against you.
Generally speaking, movement gyms take the most useful parts from different forms of training, exercise and movement to create a well-rounded, multidisciplinary approach to physical development.
Dave, creator and program director of Shoshin Movement Studio, has tried a myriad of different training and disciplines. Always the student, Dave has a list of strength, mobility and fitness certifications – but more importantly, has learned from world class level athletes, olympians and masters of their craft. In doing so, he has learned what works well, and developed programs with thought and compassion to help others to move and feel better in their bodies and reach their fitness goals effectively.
What makes us even more unique?
We follow the philosophy of ‘shoshin’.
Shoshin 初心 is a Zen Buddhist philosophy and concept of the ‘beginner's mind.’
It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject or art, even when at an advanced level.
At Shoshin Movement Studio, we require you to have an open mind. We embrace being a beginner and adopt a positive mindset to overcome obstacles in our practice. We focus on enjoying the journey because this is where we see our growth and progress.
How do we integrate all this into our classes?
Our classes will help you build the 3 elements (physical attributes) that improve your overall physical ability; strength, mobility and skills.
These 3 elements can be found across ALL of our classes; strength, mobility & handstand.
We’ll run you through some examples.
In our strength class, you will predominantly be developing strength, but you’ll also increase your mobility due to the demands of gymnastics and calisthenics style exercises. As you become stronger and move up in progression, you’ll then be increasing your skills by learning more difficult exercises and motor patterns.
In our handstand class, you will predominantly be building your handstand skills, but there is a large component of strength and mobility that are needed to develop these skills.
In our mobility class, you will be predominantly be working on your mobility and flexibility, but we implement methods that also improve your strength inside your range of motion. This not only give you more control in your ranges, but allows you to build higher level stretching skills.
For a well balanced approach to your overall fitness, we recommend a combination of classes so that you can building your body to do whatever you want, whenever you want.
For some, our handstand classes are their main focus and they use the other classes to complement their practice in order to continue progressing in this skill.
For others, building more strength and flexibility is their main focus. This can be for many reasons that include; being able to keep up with the kids, complementing a sport that they compete in or wanting to turn back the clock and improve their posture and movement.
